The Ultimate Guide to Surfing in Hiriketiya
Everything you need to know about riding the perfect left-hand reef break and gentle beach waves in Sri Lanka's hidden horseshoe bay.

Hiriketiya Bay, affectionately known as "Hiri," has transformed from a sleepy fishing village into one of the most sought-after surf destinations in Sri Lanka.
Protected from heavy winds and swell by its iconic horseshoe shape, the bay offers year-round surfing conditions that cater to everyone. Whether you are catching your very first whitewater wave or you are an advanced surfer looking for a punchy reef break, Hiriketiya delivers. The water is a balmy 28°C all year, so you can leave your wetsuit at home and surf in comfortable swimwear.
The Two Faces of Hiri
The magic of Hiriketiya lies in its layout. The bay is distinctly divided into two surfing zones, allowing different skill levels to share the water safely.
1. The Reef Break (Advanced)
On the left side of the bay, you'll find the famous Hiriketiya reef break. This is a punchy, fast left-hander that peels over a shallow, urchin-covered reef. It works best on a mid to low tide. When the Indian Ocean swell picks up, the take-off can be remarkably steep, offering an incredibly fun and sometimes barreling section before peeling into the deeper water in the center of the bay.
Pro Tip: Be mindful of the sea urchins. Booties aren't strictly necessary, but hitting the bottom here can ruin your trip. Respect the local lineup, as this peak can get crowded during high season (December to March).

2. The Beach Break (Beginners & Longboards)
If you're just learning to surf or prefer logging on a longboard, the center and right side of the bay offer a gentle, sandy bottom beach break. The waves here are slower, softer, and much more forgiving. The whitewater rolls cleanly toward the shore, making it the absolute perfect spot for surf lessons or a relaxed sunset session.
The inside section is ideal for mastering your pop-up, while the outside of the beach break offers fun, mellow rides for intermediate longboarders.
Best Time to Surf
Unlike the rest of Sri Lanka's south coast—which is typically only surfable from November to April—Hiriketiya's unique geographical shape means you can surf here almost 365 days a year.
- High Season (Dec - Mar): Perfect offshore winds, consistent swell, but peak crowds.
- Shoulder Season (Oct - Nov / Apr - May): Less crowded, fun sized waves, occasional rain showers.
- Monsoon Season (Jun - Sep): While the rest of the coast gets blown out, Hiri remains relatively protected. Expect larger, messier swells, but early mornings often offer glassy, uncrowded conditions.

Surf Lessons & Board Rentals
You absolutely don't need to fly with your own board. The beach is lined with local surf shacks offering an extensive range of rentals—from 9-foot foamies to high-performance shortboards and twin fishes. Rentals typically start at around $5 USD (1500 LKR) per hour.
